ICYMI, Part XIV

Satellites and Brigadoon
by Dale Winslow

I saw someone who looked like you—
they were taking down the moon
and consigning it to their mouth.

And what would that accomplish—
consuming the satellite of tides,
dismissing the breath of the world?

If I were to say to you that in the stillness
breathing is never there,
would you deign to investigate?
Would you so trust my words
that you would act to check on inaction?

Our implicit existence heaves itself
into the spaces between electron and nucleus—
the places where everything and nothing
live forever yet never come to be.

Independent of history, future,
and the moment whispered as now,
actuality is holding itself benevolently—
as the brain of humanity holds its namesake.
